The official ranking of random things that excite students

Due tomorrow, do tomorrow

Forget graduation, or landing a dream job or even finding your soulmate.

As students, we know the real moments of happiness are much smaller, yet somehow more exciting.

It’s the tiny victories that instantly make a boring ‘I wanna go home’ day into a ‘this is what post-secondary is all about.’

The kind of wins that wouldn’t impress anyone else but feel absolutely life-changing when you’re surviving lectures, assignments, work shifts, and the occasional identity crisis.

After careful consideration (and absolutely no scientific research whatsoever), we’ve officially ranked the random things that excite students

#12 Finding the exact study spot

Every semester as exam season rolls around, study lounges get more and more packed. Yet, we all have that one spot where procrastination has no place and study motivation is at an all-time high.

Finding that spot empty. Score!

#11 Cafeteria actually gets your order right

Sometimes it is the little things. Lunch rush can often get us a different drink than ordered, missing sauce or worse, your planned lunch being out of stock.

But when it is absolutely perfect, we don’t jinx it and enjoy the meal to its fullest.

#10 The library has the one copy of the textbook you need

You walk over expecting disappointment.

Instead, it’s sitting right there on the shelf.

For a brief moment, you feel like the universe is on your side.

#9 Your professor uploads the lecture slides before class

Yay! Now you can actually pay attention instead of trying to write 87 words per minute while deciphering handwriting from the back row.

Thank you. We appreciate you.

#8 Printer working on the first try

No login errors, no ‘out of ink’, no paper jams and no ‘file too large to upload.’

Just a smooth process and peace of mind.

#7 Someone in class asks the exact question you were too afraid to ask

They silently become your hero without a cape. The entire room suddenly understands the assignment.

That person deserves free tuition.

#6 Grades being higher than expected

We all know the dread of ‘grades have been posted’, even worse when the notification pops up in the happiest place you can be.

You still open it, and instead of seeing the red or orange shade near your grade, it’s green!

Maybe miracles are real, or was the prof feeling generous…

Either way, not complaining.

#5 Group mates from a dream

Not being hit with a “Sorry, I just saw this” is a blessing of its own.

They reply immediately, work is actually being done, and the final product does not look like a scrap project.

Is it weird that I almost shed a tear of happiness?

#4 Seats near a charging port

Finding a seat near a charger port wasn’t something I expected to find myself in, but here we are.

New class assigned, and seeing the port practically glowing at you. Happy days

#3 Professor says, “I’ll let you out early today”

No more zip noises; everyone is locked in. Questions are answered, and classmates are cooperating in every discussion to finish the class.

Nobody wants to ruin this beautiful moment.

#2 Midterm got canceled

Reading that notification is definitely the fastest speed I  can read,

‘Due to…..Midterm has been canceled….’

Emotional equivalent of finding an extra day in the week.

No greater email. Immediately text your friends and roll over to go back to sleep.

Honourable mentions

Some victories didn’t quite make the ranking but deserve recognition:

  • Finding money in your coat pocket.
  • Finishing an assignment before 11:59 p.m.
  • Getting off the course waitlist.
  • Discovering your laptop still has 40% battery.
  • Someone sharing their lecture notes.
  • The elevator arriving instantly.
  • Realizing the reading was optional.
  • Finding a clean and functioning microwave.
  • Getting a parking spot close to your campus building.
  • Remembering you packed snacks.

Shared experiences

Our experiences are built on hundreds of tiny experiences that somehow make our weeks go by.

But they are enough to make you think, “Maybe today won’t be so bad after all.”

And sometimes they are exactly what we need to end the day on a positive note. Today was nice; tomorrow will be nicer.
