ACCEPTABLE USE GUIDELINES

  1. This Acceptable Use Guidelines (“AUG”) set out the rules and expectations for anyone using:
  • the IGNITE public website at ignitestudentunion.ca (“Website”),
  • the  MyIGNITE student engagement platform at my.ignitestudentunion.ca, and the MyIGNITE mobile application in the iOS and Android environments (collectively, the “Services”),
  • any interactive features, messaging tools, profiles, communities, or content hosted by IGNITE (“the Services”).

By accessing or using the Services, you agree to follow the AUG. The AUG work together with IGNITE’s Terms of Use, Privacy Policy, as well as Humber Polytechnic’s Code of Student Community Standards and Human Rights and Harassment Policy

To access or use these Services, you must be 16 years of age or older. You must also fall into one of our approved user categories, which include current, fee-paying student members of the IGNITE Student Union; faculty or staff members of Humber Polytechnic or the University of Guelph-Humber; or an approved community partner.

IGNITE Student Union (“IGNITE”, “we”, “us”) may update this AUG as needed to ensure student safety and maintain a positive, respectful, and secure environment.

  1. Respectful Behaviour

IGNITE is committed to maintaining a safe, inclusive, and respectful student community. You may not use the Services to:

  • bully, harass, threaten, or intimidate others
  • discriminate based on race, gender, sexuality, disability, religion, or any protected status
  • promote hate, violence, or extremist behaviour
  • encourage self‑harm or harm to others
  • engage in abusive, profane, or aggressive conduct

Attacks on individuals or groups – whether through text, images, emojis, or disguised language – are prohibited.

  1. Honest & Authentic Use

You must not:

  • impersonate any person or organization
  • create fake or misleading profiles
  • misrepresent your identity, age, or student status
  • provide false information to IGNIITE
  • attempt to manipulate or deceive other students

Academic integrity rules from your institution still apply to content and conduct even though IGNITE is a separate organization.

  1. Privacy & Confidentiality

You may not

  • share another person’s private information (e.g., contact details, personal data, screenshots of private conversations) without explicit permission
  • “doxx” or expose someone’s identity or location
  • record or share content intended to be private
  • upload content that violates another person’s privacy rights

Respecting privacy is essential for community safety.

  1. Prohibited Content

The following content is not allowed on the Services:

  1. Illegal Content

Including but not limited to:

  • criminal activity
  • fraudulent schemes
  • copyright‑infringement
  • threats of violence
  • distribution of illegal items
  1. Other Prohibited Content
  • Harmful or Unsafe Content (including any content related to self-harm, encouraging dangerous behaviour, or content glorifying violence or injury)
  • Sexual Content (including sexually explicit images or videos, sexual content involving minors, or non‑consensual content)
  • Graphic or Disturbing Material (including excessively violent, gory, or shock content)
  1. Misuse of Technology

You may not

  • upload malware or harmful code
  • attempt to bypass authentication or security features
  • engage in scraping, data mining, or unauthorized data gathering
  • interfere with platform functionality or performance
  • use automation, bots, or scripts to access or post content
  • misuse reporting tools to harass or target users
  • send spam, mass messages, or unwanted solicitations

Because IGNITE’s digital properties, database storage, and user authentication systems operate in direct collaboration with, and rely heavily upon, Humber Polytechnic’s IT networks, server hosting, and shared enterprise software licensing, any technical misuse or security bypass attempts targeted at our Services will be co-investigated with institutional IT authorities and handled under both this policy and institutional infrastructure rules.

  1. Intellectual Property

You may not post or share:

  • content that you do not own or have rights to
  • copyrighted media without permission
  • stolen or plagiarized material
  • content that infringes trademarks or proprietary marks

You are responsible for ensuring that anything you upload is legally permissible.

  1. Integrity of Community Spaces

Community features exist to support student life, connection, and participation. You may not

  • disrupt conversations, events, or community groups
  • hijack discussions with irrelevant or harmful content
  • promote political candidates or external commercial products (unless approved by IGNITE)
  • impersonate IGNITE staff or moderators
  • create groups or posts that violate IGNITE policies
  1. Safety, Reporting, and Emergency Situations

IGNITE takes safety seriously. If you encounter content that is:

  • abusive
  • threatening
  • dangerous
  • discriminatory
  • or otherwise in violation of the AUG

You should report it immediately using the built-in platform reporting mechanisms, which allow you to instantly flag offensive content and directly block abusive users, or by contacting IGNITE staff.

IGNITE may contact campus safety, law enforcement, or emergency services if credible threats are identified.

  1. Enforcement & Consequences

IGNITE may take action when the AUG is violated, including:

  • removing or restricting content
  • issuing warnings
  • limiting or disabling features
  • temporarily suspending accounts
  • permanently banning users
  • reporting safety threats to appropriate authorities
  • cooperating with law enforcement when required

In accordance with mobile application marketplace standards, IGNITE enforces a zero-tolerance policy for objectionable, abusive, or harmful user behavior. For severe violations identified on our mobile applications, IGNITE reserves the right to review, filter, or remove user-generated content and block, restrict, or terminate user accounts within twenty-four (24) hours of detecting or receiving a report.

Please be aware that to maintain institutional records and platform integrity, user accounts that are terminated due to policy violations, or accounts where deletion is requested voluntarily, are safely archived rather than permanently deleted. Archiving removes your profile and group associations from all active directories, but historical records, resources, past events, and attendance data remain securely stored for future institutional retrieval.

  1. Appeals

If your content or account is restricted, you may request a review by contacting IGNITE. IGNITE will review appeals in good faith but is not required to reinstate content or accounts.

  1. Changes to This Policy

IGNITE may update this Acceptable Use Policy to reflect:

  • changes in technology
  • safety requirements
  • new community features
  • legal or regulatory updates

When changes are made, the “Last Updated” date will be revised and notice will be provided when appropriate.
