Happening every winter semester, the IGNITE Election determines who sits on the Board of Directors. This student-governed body is responsible for overseeing IGNITE’s direction, policies, and priorities.

Becoming a director provides you with hands-on governance experience, networking opportunities, and lifelong friendships. You’ll not only grow your resume and get out of your comfort zone, but also leave a lasting impact on students and your campus.
All fee-paying Humber Polytechnic and University of Guelph-Humber students are eligible to vote in the IGNITE Election. You will vote for your representative based on the campus you belong to.
How to Run
To run in the election, download the Nomination Package, determine your eligibility and submit your application.
The IGNITE Board of Directors is typically composed using a campus-based breakdown:
- 3 Directors from North
- 3 Directors from Lakeshore
- 3 Directors from University of Guelph-Humber
- 1 Director from Downtown

What is the election for?
The election determines next year’s Board of Directors at IGNITE. The Board is the governing body of the student union.
What does the Board of Directors do?
Directors provide governance and oversight for IGNITE as a student union. That includes approving policies and budgets, setting strategic priorities, monitoring organizational performance, and staying accountable to the students they represent.
Do I need governance experience to run?
No. Directors receive extensive training and ongoing support from day one. What matters most is the ability to think critically, communicate clearly, and take the responsibilities of the role seriously.
Do Board Directors receive compensation?
Directors may receive up to $3,500 per year as an honorarium. The Chair may receive up to $4,500.
What is the time commitment for Directors?
The Director role is steady but manageable alongside full-time studies. It includes eight board meetings (approximately 4 hours each), a mandatory orientation + training, participation on at least one board committee, and monthly governance learning sessions through the summer.
What do I need to vote?
Make sure you’re registered with MyIGNITE and are a fee-paying student. You do not need to be a permanent resident or citizen of Canada to vote in the IGNITE election.
Where do I vote?
Voting takes place online through MyIGNITE.
When will the results be announced?
Election results will be announced within 24 hours of polls closing.
What additional leadership experience do Board Directors get?
Board Directors have the opportunity to sit on committees within the organization and tailor their experience. The committees available to join are the Advocacy Committee, CEO Evaluation Committee, Governance Review Committee and the Finance & Audit Committee.
