When Drag meets the internet
Drag culture and the internet were basically made for each other.
Memes, reaction GIFs, TikToks, viral performances and iconic quotes have allowed drag moments to travel far beyond the stage. A funny moment at a drag show can become a meme by the next morning, and suddenly everyone is using a queen’s reaction to describe their midterm results.
The internet has helped introduce drag culture to new audiences while giving fans endless ways to celebrate their favourite queens. And now, with Drag Your A$$ to School coming up, we’re looking back at some of the moments that had us laughing, quoting, and occasionally wondering, “Did they really just say that?”
“A drag queen?!”
On The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, when Jimmy talked about RuPaul being the first-ever drag queen to be on the cover of Vanity Fair, he referred to RuPaul as a drag queen.
But Ru wasted no time to set the record straight: “I’m the queen of drag.”
This moment, with Jimmy’s reaction, went down as one of the most unforgettable things to happen on TV. And of course, X wasted no time making the funniest memes that have happened on the platform.
“Don’t dream it, be it”
If you’ve spent any time around drag culture, you’ve probably encountered Alyssa Edwards’ legendary “Back Rolls?” and “BEAST!” moments. Her facial expressions alone could qualify as their own form of comedy.
Whether she’s reacting to a runway or simply existing dramatically in a room, Alyssa has given the internet an endless supply of reaction GIFs. Forever grateful.
“Security”
If there has to be a moment quoted time and time again, it has to be Tatianna on RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars 2 reunion, during a fight with Raven, when she cut through the chaos to tell another queen she wasn’t done speaking.
What followed was absolute history.
“Oh. Honey. Girl. Security” might just be THE sound bite TikTok just loves.
Trixie and Katya’s entire existence
It would be impossible to make a list of funny drag moments without mentioning Trixie Mattel and Katya Zamolodchikova.
From their deadpan delivery to funniest commentaries and endless collection of facial expressions, they have built an entire comedy empire around being extremely, unapologetically themselves. Their ability to turn an ordinary story into an unnecessarily dramatic one is basically an art form.
My personal favourite video to date: Kombucha Girl Drag Transformation with Brittany Broski. Every re-watch just gets funnier.
Monet’s fake split
Another unforgettable moment was Monet X Change’s lip-sync performance to “Pound the Alarm,” when the song came for a well-deserved split, the performance intensity, judges on the edge of their seats, the crowd ready for the loudest cheer and… nothing…
It was a fakeout.
Surprisingly, this made the performance so much more unforgettable. Some fans even go so far as to claim this as a cultural reset. Iconic.
“Everybody say love!”
RuPaul’s Drag Race has produced countless catchphrases, but RuPaul’s signature ability to turn basically anything into a motivational moment deserves its own category.
Between “Shantay, you stay,” “Sashay away,” and “Everybody say love,” Drag Race has practically created its own dictionary of phrases that somehow make their way into everyday conversations.
